The first metal shirt I ever purchased was a bootleg Sepultura t-shirt from a dollar store in the Gold Coast, I was 14/15 and saw it hanging from the ceiling bizarrely. I think it was a bootleg of a bootleg. It was on weird material and had ‘Sepultura’ sprawled across the top in the most goosebump-esque green you’ve ever seen, with the ‘Slave New World’ fist cover - or should I say, the almost Slave New World fist. I have no idea why, what, or where that thing ended up but I think about it at least once a week, alongside many of my teenage belongings. If I could go back in time, I’d be collecting my lost t-shirts. That & my camo Ramones shirt. I think I lost that guy on a school camp? I miss you guys and think about you all the time. What we could have been….what we could have seen…what we could have achieved together </3
I love seeing legacy acts at The Tivoli. It’s made and meant for legacy acts. From the walls to the red royal carpet floors, the atmosphere is always buzzing, and cute and the tiered balconies are cosy and add that dramatic flair I so love. Joy is tucking yourself into the corner of the left side of the stage - top balcony, knees to your chest as you watch from above. But I didn’t do that because I was photographing. I was just setting the scene for you all.
Max and Iggor are legacies - so in short - The Tivoli was perfect to watch them rip. I was expecting a few Sepultura tracks with the new re-recordings, but this setlist was epic.
I think I turned to Marty after every song with the slow head nod shit. That was essentially the show summed up. I was almost entirely grinning or slowly nodding my head repeating ‘I don’t want this to end’.
Getting the chance to photograph and experience the music that moulded you into the person you remain to be, is very full circle and special. I will never tire of the excitement and joy that is watching the noise being created, snooping the pedal boards, the setlists, what drinks they’re sipping on (tonight’s case was full sugar coke) - seeing the keepsakes or notes tucked behind an amp or foldback or at the base of a mic stand.
Being able to take in Max and Iggor’s talent together was an epic experience and one I’m so glad to have. Their energy and spirits were high, I caught many smiles and many moments of looking out into the Brisbane crowd and soaking in the atmosphere of the room. I saw a woman crying and smiling, and generally a room of very smiley stoked people… As well as a few given strange eggs - to be expected - wouldn’t be right without that rogue guy who stood in front of us suspiciously before attempting to get onto the stage before being immediately grabbed by security. You fail 100% of the shots you never take, so kudos for trying? But not Kudos at all. Get away from the kings?!?!
